Many Malaysian would know this song. I think it’s appropriate to share it on Merdeka Day.
Demi negara yang tercinta
Dicurahkan bakti penuh setia
Demi Raja yang disanjung tinggi
Kesetiaan tak berbelah bagi
Kepada pemimpin kepada rakyat
Khidmat diberi penuh taat
Sama bekerja sama berusaha
Setia berkhidmat untuk semua
Rela berkorban apa saja
Amanah bangsa tetap dijaga
Kami berikrar penuh setia
Untuk agama bangsa dan negara

Today is the 51st year birthday since Tunku Abdul Rahman, our first prime minister proclaimed independence with 7 shouts of MERDEKA at Dataran Merdeka.
Malaysians at WA had several events to celebrate this historical event and reignite the spirit of Merdeka.
On 24 August, AMWA had its annual Merdeka Day Golf. This year it was held at Meadow Spring Golf & Country Club in Mandurah. The weather was perfect this year and fellow golfers enjoyed a great game, an indian lunch and witty entertainment by Mr Quek.

On 28 August, the Consulate General of Malaysia in Perth hosted an official merdeka reception at the Perth Town Hall. Local dignataries and members of Malaysian community had an enjoyable evening in the beautiful setting of historical Town Hall.

The finale of Merdeka celebration was held last night at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre. With “Wonderful Colours of Malaysia”, AMWA hosted the 51st Merdeka celebration with Malaysian cuisine, cultural performances, a fantastic live band, groovy dances, happy snaps and a lot of fun!
Dr Eric Tan who is well known for his outstanding contribution to multiculturalism in WA and his Chancellor position at Curtin University of Technology, received the inaugural AMWA Award and gave an inspirational speech on harmony in multicultural society.

Hit the photos and see these events in action.

Despite widespread concerns about democratic practices in Malaysia, and US warnings on the treatment of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, Kevin Rudd on his first official visit to Kuala Lumpur this month declared democracy is flourishing in Malaysia.
The Prime Minister might not be telling it as it is and differing in opinion with Australia’s No. 1 strategic partner, but he has again demonstrated he is steering a new course for Australian foreign policy and that the strong alliance with the US does not mean automatic compliance on every aspect of foreign policy.
Just as he has stepped aside from the Iraq quagmire, Mr Rudd is redefining the relationship with Australia’s neighbours, who have been unhappy with John Howard’s deputy sheriff stance and the threat of pre-emptive strikes.
Mr Rudd is prepared to overlook domestic tensions in Malaysia in pursuit of the bigger picture of greater engagement with the region, particularly his vision of an Asia-Pacific community by 2020.

The story came from brunei-online.com with an article reporting a Bruneian student’s involvement in the production entitled “Noongar Dandjoo”. “Noongar Dandjoo” won the National Antenna Award for ‘Best Indigenous Programme’ on Australian Community television, as well as the West Australian Screen Award for ‘Best Indigenous Programme’ on Perth’s Access 31.
According to Rashelle Bishop, who is a lecturer and an executive producer, Noongar Dandjoo is a groundbreaking TV series about Aboriginal culture, produced entirely by university students, including from Brunei and Malaysia.
If you the Malaysian students who are involved in this project, let us know.

No request from alleged trafficker
By Najiah Najib
July 9th, 2008
IT’S odd for Malaysians arrested by foreign authorities for alleged drug trafficking not to ask for help from the Malaysian consulate in that country. Yet, this seems to be the case of a 22-year-old Malaysian woman who was recently detained by Australian Customs after they discovered more than two kilogrammes of heroin concealed in her suitcase.
